Hi, and welcome to another ‘Beauty tips and tricks with ‘THE beauty maven’.

When it comes to ultimate beauty health during these summer months, I advise you to opt for 3 key skincare products. Their ingredients aim to protect and prevent the skin from cellular damage, which I’ll discuss shortly. Understand that extra protection from the sun doesn’t have to be boring; I’ll explain how fashion comes into play for a healthy complexion.

Beautiful skin for the beach and the Sun.

Firstly, let’s talk about the sun – the sun permits harmful Ultra Violet Radiation such as UVA and UVB rays. Did you know that UVA rays (also known as the ‘aging’ ray) penetrate the deepest, which targets the skins dermal layers causing premature aging?
Then we have UVB rays (also called the ‘burning’ ray), which cause the skin to burn, that’s right – aka a suntan, that most of us look forward to when the sun comes out.

Whether you’re sunbathing on the beach or taking a walk to the ice cream van, ‘skin care is a must’ to protect your skin from the sun’s UV rays.

So how do you protect your skin for the beach?

Use a toner that includes nourishing ingredients such as Allantoin to soften, heal and protect the skin. Good toners are alcohol-free and balance the skin’s pH for optimal skin care penetration plus protect the skin’s barrier to keep it strong and healthy.

For healthy skin for the beach use a Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) serum at 5% or higher. Serums penetrate the skin the quickest and are lightweight, which is beneficial for use in hotter weather and for those who have oily skin types. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that protects the skin from free radicals and environmental damage.

Thirdly, protect your skin for the beach by using a broad-spectrum of sun block (which essentially means it protects you from both UVA and UVB rays) and apply a moderate amount before going into the sun. Fairer skin Fitzpatrick skin types 1- 3 should opt for SPF50 and darker skin types 4-6 can use SPF30.

You fashionistas will love this one – buy a sombrero hat that suits your style. Hats with a wide brim will offer shade and protection from direct sunlight. Since the skin around the eyes are thin and are up to 10 times more sensitive to UV damage, (hence ages the quickest) keep your eyes healthy by wearing sunglasses with UV protection – a good excuse to go shopping right?

In summizing getting your skin ready for the beach , stay protected in the sun by using an alcohol-free toner to protect the skin’s pH and strengthen its barrier. Use a powerful antioxidant such as topical Vitamin C combined with a broad-spectrum sunblock SPF 30 or higher. Don’t forget to wear sunglasses with UV protection and a wide-brimmed hat for shade. Ultimately, practicing these skin care safety measures will aid in the prevention of premature aging, sunburns and skin cancer.
